60″ x 72″ acrylic on canvas

This painting was inspired by a photograph taken by Eve Arnold (1912-2012) in Mongolia in 1979. She traveled to China in 1979 for a total of 5 months to take photographs. “I don’t see anybody as either ordinary or extraordinary,” she said in a 1990 BBC interview, “I see them simply as people in front of my lens.”

The photo was taken in Inner Mongolia and included in her book, “In China.” She entitled her photograph, “Horse Training for the Militia”

CHINA. Inner Mongolia. Horse training for the militia. 1979.

This photograph is precious to me: it emanates the trust between a woman and her horse and a landscape similar to that which I live in.
